Read this article about changes the Texas State Board of Education made this spring.
And this one broke my heart: The board removed the concepts of “justice” and “responsibility for the common good” from a list of characteristics of good citizenship for Grades 1-3. (The proposal to remove “equality” failed.) (1/14/10)
It is clear why right-wing christians would be afraid of justice and “the common good,” but it makes me sad. Today I have to lean on one of my favorite guiding principles: “It is not incumbent on you to complete the task, but neither are you free to desist therefrom…”(Talmud, Avot 2:21).

grrr that makes my blood boil. Especially the “common good” one. I could write a ten page rant on why the common good is at the foundation of our country AND christianity, but…I’ll just stew quietly.
